Al Ain: The United Arab Emirates University is commemorating World Space Week this week, an annual event established by the United Nations in 1999 to recognize the contribution of science and technology to human progress.
University Chancellor and Cultural Adviser to the UAE President Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh took advantage of the opportunity to applaud UAE leadership for launching an Emirati mission to investigate Venus and the solar system’s asteroid belt, as well as the first Arab vehicle landing. He said that His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, both expressed their confidence in the UAEU with this initiative.
“Women in Space” is the theme of the 2021 celebration. Dr. Reem Fares, an assistant professor in the College of Science’s Department of Physics, stated that Emirati women hold prominent positions in the country, with the Mother of the Nation, H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, at the forefront (FDF).
The UAEU is proud of its alumna Noura Al Matrooshi, who is one of the first Emirati astronauts, according to Dr. Fares.
The UAE leadership has picked the university to join in the expedition to examine Venus and the solar system’s asteroids, according to Dr. Reem. She said it illustrates the university’s commitment to providing an exceptional education in pure and applied science and research, as well as empowering all students to flourish in their studies. The university’s work is in line with the nation’s long-term strategic plan.
