Dubai: At Expo 2020 in Dubai, the United Nations will commemorate “Honor Day.” Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, will attend the ceremony in person and deliver the opening comments. Ms. Mohammed will join dignitaries from the UAE government and Expo leadership, the UN Commissioner-General at Expo Maher Nasser, the UN Resident Coordinator in the UAE Dena Assaf, UN Country Team leadership, the diplomatic community, and representatives from national pavilions to commemorate the United Nations’ 76th anniversary.
The ceremonial ceremony will begin on the Al Wasl Dome’s Stage of Nations. The ceremony will include a cultural performance by the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO) in addition to welcoming and opening speeches. Visitors are encouraged to visit the UN Hub, which is located in the Mission Possible-Opportunity Pavilion, as part of the Expo 2020 site’s UN Day celebrations, to see a unique depiction of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) through artworks by local and international artists. In addition, an outdoor picture show named “#TheWorldWeWant” will feature handpicked photographs from over 50,000 images from over 130 nations, reflecting future hopes and desires.
The Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra will also perform a special “Hymn to the United Nations” for the general audience, which was written 50 years ago by famed cellist, composer, and conductor Pablo Casals to commemorate the United Nations’ efforts on October 24, 1971. The Honor Day ceremony will be live-streamed on the UN YouTube channel and UN Web TV, allowing viewers from all over the world to virtually attend.
Every year on the 24th of October, the United Nations celebrates the anniversary of the UN Charter’s entry into force in 1945. The United Nations formally came into being with the passage of the UN Charter, the organization’s foundational text. UN Day provides an opportunity to expand our shared agenda and reaffirm the UN Charter’s aims and ideals, which have guided us for the past 76 years.
