Dubai: Aster MIMS Hospital in Kozhikode is notable for constructing a new field hospital
exclusively for Covid patients as Covid-19 continues to spread rapidly and beds are no longer available in
hospitals. This is the first time a field hospital has been set up in Kerala as part of the Covid defense. The
field hospital will be equipped with a 50-bed ventilator, bipap and oxygen facilities exclusively for Covid
patients. The first 25 beds, will open on Wednesday, May 5. Its most notable feature is that the new
twenty-five-bed capacity hospital was built in just five days.
The field hospital is located in the carparking ground near the previously established make-shift ICU.
“The suggestion of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister Smt. Teacher was the impetus for
making this idea a reality”, said Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster
DM Healthcare. “In collaboration with Aster Volunteers, free Covid treatment will be provided to needy
Covid patients. Efforts and discussions are underway in other districts of Kerala to construct further field
hospitals.
We have just announced to set-up a 50-bed field hospital in New Delhi as a part of our Aster
Volunteers programme,” added Dr. Azad Moopen.
“Earlier, Aster MIMS was able to accommodate an additional 20 ICU beds with the innovative concept of
Make Shift ICU. With the realization of the field hospital, it was possible to set up seventy beds within a
few days, including the ICU and ventilator facility,” Mr. Farhan Yasin (North Kerala CEO of Aster MIMS)
said.Though it was planned to be completed within ten days, it was completed in half the time under the
leadership of Liju and Sudhir, Heads of Engineering. The team led by Biomed head Manish and CNO
Sheelamma worked tirelessly to make the systems, including the ventilator and bi-pap machine, and
arrangements of staff nurses a reality within a few days. The concept and formation are completely led
by Dr. Venugopalan P P (Head, Emergency Medicine). Dr. Azad Moopen congratulated all those who
worked hard to make this project a reality.
